India travel guide
India is huge, and the distances between its highlights are long. A planned tour sorts out the trains, drivers and hotels, so you spend your time seeing places rather than arranging how to get between them.
The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal and completed in the mid-1600s. The Gatimaan Express connects Delhi and Agra in about 100 minutes, which makes a same-day visit comfortable. Agra Fort, a short drive away, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Munnar’s tea estates cover the hills of the Western Ghats. Thekkady is home to the Periyar Tiger Reserve and its spice plantations. At Alleppey (Alappuzha) you spend a night on a houseboat, a converted rice barge called a kettuvallam, gliding along the backwaters.
Goa mixes beaches with Portuguese colonial heritage. The churches and convents of Old Goa, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inland, Dudhsagar Falls drops in four tiers down a forested hillside near the Karnataka border.
Shimla was the summer capital of British India, and its Mall Road is still the heart of the town. Manali is the base for Solang Valley, known for paragliding in summer and snow in winter, and for the Atal Tunnel, which runs beneath the Rohtang Pass towards Lahaul.
